Abstract

This study aims to develop a comprehensive scale for measuring tourists’ motives for visiting dark tourism destinations. Reflecting society's growing curiosity about sites associated with death and disasters, dark tourism is projected to grow significantly, reaching US$ 36.5 billion by 2032. This research integrates psychological and existential theories to create the Dark Tourism Destination Motivation Scale, encompassing factors such as Informative Engagement, Experiential Immersion, Causal Interests, Conviviality and Emotional Resonance. The study also examines the interplay of objective perception, subjective perception, actual behaviour, and post-visit behaviour with the identified constructs. By providing valuable insights into tourists’ diverse motivations, this study aids destination marketers and policymakers in enhancing visitor experiences and promoting responsible tourism. Future research should validate this scale across different cultural contexts and dark tourism types.
