Abstract

This article investigates the resurgence of politicisation within social work, foregrounding recent scholarly calls for a more engaged, dissenting, and transformative practice (Garrett, Citation2021b; Gray & Webb, Citation2013; Kamali, Citation2022). This resurgence has been particularly pronounced in Flanders and Brussels, where the 2018 Flemish Social Work Conference positioned politicisation as a cornerstone of future practice (Vandekinderen et al., Citation2020). This article explores the potential of prefigurative politics within social work as a distinct form and practice of dissensus, central to the process of politicisation. Unlike theories of agonistic politicisation rooted in post-Marxist post-foundationalism (e.g. Badiou, Citation1999; Marchart, Citation2007; Mouffe, Citation2013) the concept of prefigurative politics, informed by anarchist thought, advances transformative social change through the creation of alternative, non-institutional practices that embody future societal ideals (Törnberg, Citation2021), resonating with Rancière's fundamental insights on democracy (Rancière, Citation1999, Citation2005), both emphasising the rejection of hierarchical authority and the enactment of egalitarian relations in the present. Anchored in the Flemish and Brussels context, this contribution integrates theoretical inquiry with empirical reflections, advocating for prefigurative politics as a vital approach to reorienting social work towards emancipatory and justice-oriented outcomes.SAMENVATTINGDit artikel onderzoekt de heropleving van politisering binnen het sociaal werk en belicht recente wetenschappelijke oproepen tot een meer betrokken, afwijkende en transformatieve praktijk (Garrett, Citation2021b; Gray & Webb, Citation2013; Kamali, Citation2022).
