Abstract

Social and cultural integration are critical components of sustainable development and align with the objectives of the Sustainable Development Goals 10, 11 and 16. This study which engaged with 25 participants is about the integration of the Fulani among the Nanumba in northern Ghana. The study utilised the Interactive Acculturation Framework (IAF) to explore the socio-cultural factors that have facilitated the successful integration of the Fulani into Nanumba communities in northern Ghana. Using observations and semi-structured interviews, the research identified key practices and factors within the domains of political institutions, marriage and social affinity, and spirituality as central to the integration of the Fulani among the Nanumba. These factors have enabled the Fulani to establish functional and harmonious relationships within Nanumba societies. The findings suggest that the integration model observed in Nanun offers valuable insights for policymakers and practitioners in rural integration aiming to enhance the integration of migrant groups in other regions of Ghana. By adopting these socio-cultural strategies, communities can promote mutual benefits and foster peaceful coexistence between migrants and host populations.
