Abstract

The term ‘mythopolitics’ has been used descriptively by some scholars studying South Asia. This article uses two case studies from India – one from the political elite and one from a resisting subaltern group – to demonstrate mythopolitical processes. Here ‘mythopolitics’ is/are defined as a battleground of storyworlds. This concept will add to the important interdisciplinary work of suturing the academically disparate fields of folklore studies, study of religion, and political science. This article proposes the term mythopolitics as an analytical category that helps us understand the way myths and political processes are connected in ethno-nationalist and populist regimes globally.
