Two Different Ways of Nonviolent Resistance: A Comparison of Mahatma Gandhi's Satyagraha and Said Nursi's Positive Action Method
Abstract
Mahatma Gandhi and Said Nursi, who lived as contemporaries in two different societies in Asia, still maintain their influence on large masses with their intellectual heritage. Two leaders, each with a unique methodology for non-violent resistance, were compared for the first time in this study. This comparison is not made based on their entire biographies or their entire works but is limited to Gandhi's satyagraha and Nursi's positive action method. The main argument of our study is that these two methodologies are comparable and show similarities and differences within their conditions. We hope that our results will enable richer readings in terms of future studies on conflict, peace, dialogue and non-violent resistance.
