Abstract

This study investigated home (HNE) and child (EFs, language skills) factors in predicting variation in early numeracy skills of 19 deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) and 31 typically hearing (TH) preschoolers, with an average age of 41 months. Results showed that DHH children exhibited lower scores in language and EFs, but no differences were found in early numeracy and HNE compared to TH children. Most importantly, we found that language skills uniquely predicted early numeracy skills in both groups. Our findings provide valuable insight for early interventionists, caregivers and teachers with strategies to promote numeracy development in DHH children and set them up for academic success.
