Relationships among moisture loss, volumetric and strength properties of cold mix asphalt: impacts of curing dynamic and active fillers
Abstract
This study investigated the moisture loss behavior of Cold Mix Asphalt (CMA) at different curing conditioning and establish its relationship with strength and volumetric properties with fillers. Initially, the morphological and chemical composition of five fillers were studied. Next, the moisture loss behavior of the CMA mixes was analyzed for 14 days at two temperatures. CMA mixes displayed distinct moisture loss patterns based on the filler type used. Next, Total Void (TV) and Air Void (AV) of CMA were estimated, among which AV showed transient behavior as the curing progressed. AV increased over time as moisture evaporated, approaching Total Void (TV). Combined analysis of AV-TV distribution and incremental AV change effectively captured the evolving internal structure of CMA. Subsequently, Indirect Tensile Strength (ITS) of all mixes was evaluated at various curing stages for four CMA mixes. Furthermore, a predictive model was developed to estimate ITS across various curing conditions.
