Abstract

On the aftermath of the Cass Report, and taking into account the hostile environment in which young Trans people currently live in the UK, this article captures first-person accounts of young Trans people about their own lives and lived experiences with available psychological support and healthcare services. This article is not research-based, but a case report based on conversations with young Trans people who access a Trans-specific charity organisation Mermaid. This paper attempts to draw some conclusions on the needs of young Trans people, which may motivate research, and improvement in clinical settings. The queer youth were involved in the consultation process and were specific about what they would like and wanted their voices heard. These conversations were conducted on a casual basis (in groups), and without formal research protocol, therefore there was no ethics approval needed. However, the conversations were led ethically, which means that the clinician’s own thoughts and ideas were not imposed on Trans people so that their own authentic voices could be fully captured. The main conclusion drawn from several common themes was that medical staff did not have enough knowledge, sensitivies and skills to deal with psychological support.
