Abstract

This article explores the creative rehearsal process of the British theatre company Mischief Worldwide, known for producing comedy that sits at the intersection of scripted and improvisational forms. Drawing on ethnographic observation of rehearsals for The Comedy About Spies, supported by interviews with cast and creative team members, the study examines how Mischief sustains ensemble-based collaboration whilst operating as a commercial theatre company. Key features of their process include playfulness, multi-vocality, shared vocabulary, experimentation, iterative rewrites, and audience-informed showings. The company’s rehearsal methodology emphasizes collective input from actors, writers, and directors, integrating improvisational principles such as clowning, ‘beats’, ‘buttons’, and ‘doorography’ to structure timing, movement, and comic effect. The article demonstrates how this approach allows the company to develop tightly choreographed physical comedy while nurturing long-term company cohesion, enabling the transfer of shows to new casts without loss of performance quality. By highlighting Mischief’s balance of creativity, collaboration, and commercial pragmatism, the study offers insight into contemporary British comedy-making and the sustaining of ensemble theatre in professional practice.
