From colonial legacies to contemporary challenges: understanding and addressing Nigeria’s fragility
Abstract
The increasing prevalence of state failure, fragility, and collapse in Africa is evident as military coups continue to displace democratic leaders and long-standing regional alliances fracture into new blocs. This study investigates the historical roots of state fragility in Africa, focusing on Nigeria and its consequences for global development. Utilizing qualitative data from primary observations and secondary sources, the article assesses Nigeria’s condition and its impact on national, regional, and global progress. The analysis contends that colonial-era disruptions, combined with post-independence mismanagement and overreliance on resources, have deepened state fragility in Nigeria, mirroring trends across other African nations, with repercussions for domestic, regional, and global security. Recommended solutions include bolstering institutions, prioritizing education, promoting inclusive governance, and fostering internal unity through reforms tailored to local contexts. By comprehensively tackling these issues, Nigeria can reduce the risk of further deterioration and contribute to sustainable development across Africa.
