Panchayat web series as political commentary: assessing media representations of India's local democracy
Abstract
This article analyzes the Panchayat web series as a political commentary on India’s local democracy, examining how popular media shapes public understanding of rural governance. The review takes up the series because of its wide reach and its influence in framing narratives about rural India. It argues that the series misses the opportunity to engage with the nuanced reality of caste-based social structures, instead presenting a sanitized and nearly casteless village landscape. While the series touches upon the relationship between gender and political agency, it ultimately reinforces patriarchal stereotypes about women in politics. The analysis further shows how the portrayal of administration in rural areas oversimplifies the operational challenges of governance. Overall, the review argues that Panchayat offers an incomplete and idealized vision of rural democracy, raising critical concerns about how popular media represents and circulates the political and social complexities of rural India.
