Abstract

Although both Knowledge Management and Environmental Management usually play a crucial role in achieving sustainable business success and competitive advantage, literature still lacks conclusions on their dependency. The study seeks to address these gaps by exploring the relationships between Knowledge Management variables (Knowledge Management Strategy, Knowledge Management Structure, Knowledge Management Culture, and Knowledge Management System) and the Environmental Management System certification (according to the ISO 14001 International Standard). To collect data, a survey was conducted among owners/managers of European companies by using the Social Networking Site LinkedIn. A total of 796 completed surveys were received. To analyze the data, a conceptual model was created and validated by utilizing statistical analysis. The results may be valuable for owners/managers of companies across Europe, thus suggesting that companies that invest resources in developing supportive Knowledge Management are more likely to have a certified Environmental Management System. This may lead to ensuring compliance with regulations, reducing emissions, enhancing the use of recycled materials, controlling the use/storage of hazardous materials, etc. This seems to suggest that the amount of resources companies is ready to invest in Knowledge Management is a predictor that will make a difference in achieving long-term advantages and business success.
