Media leaning in Romania: an audience-centric study
Abstract
Media political leaning is commonly measured either from content or from audiences. We adopt an audience-centric approach for Romania and label outlets using (1) self-placement on a left – right scale and (2) stance towards PSD, the dominant political party since 1989. Using a nationally representative survey (N = 1,222), we find that audiences of the most visible online media outlets skew right on average, while only two are pro-PSD. The PSD axis has greater explanatory power for audience-based outlet leaning than the conventional left – right dimension.
