Abstract

This article is a case study in the utility of structured light 3D scanning for cultural preservation in an academic library. The New Mexico State University Library initiated a pilot project to 3D scan two large public art murals, each over a hundred feet long. In doing so, the researchers made key discoveries in how to approach projects of this scale, including the hardware required, key partnerships that can be developed, and practical considerations for scanning large objects. This project was successful in demonstrating the feasibility of 3D scanning public art pieces for preservation purposes.
