Abstract

We describe and analyze how movidas de plática, or discursive move, broadened the discursive space for bilingual teachers to discuss culturally revitalizing pedagogies. Using ethnographic and qualitative participatory research, we focus on teacher pláticas from 2016–2019 in an out-of-school educational program. We analyze these movidas de plática in the midst of curricular transformation addressing the anti-immigrant discourse of the first Trump presidency by creating culturally revitalizing pedagogies. We argue that relational movidas de plática broadened the discursive agency of teachers by promoting affective and epistemic connections that centered teachers’ social, cultural and emotional epistemic expertise within teacher discourse.
