Much More Than Food: Leveraging Community Cultural Wealth Through the Campus Food Pantry
Abstract
The article seeks to understand an earlier finding that Latinx students at one HSI were more likely than other racial groups to report mental health benefits from accessing a campus food pantry (CFP). Using a community cultural wealth framework and drawing on qualitative, semi-structured interviews with Latinx students who regularly sought food assistance (n = 20), we examine the ways that interacting with the CFP provided these students opportunities to leverage their aspirational, familial, navigational, resistant, and social capital. We explore implications for the well-being and educational success of Latinx students and for culturally validating student services and CFPs, in particular.
