SCADA for industrial automation using piezoelectric sensors with blockchain and machine learning
Abstract
Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition known as SCADA systems are essential for managing geographically dispersed assets across thousands of square kilometers in sectors such as water and sewage distribution, oil and gas pipelines, electricity grids, and rail transportation. By collecting and processing status data, SCADA control centers remotely monitor field stations through long-distance communication networks and issue automated or operator-driven supervisory commands to field devices. To enhance safety and data integrity in critical infrastructure, blockchain technology can be integrated with SCADA systems. Its distributed and immutable ledger ensures that collected data remains authentic and tamper-proof, offering substantial protection for smart grids and other systems reliant on real-time, cyber-vulnerable data streams. This article also presents a life cycle assessment (LCA) examining the environmental impacts of piezoelectric vibration sensors used in wind turbine electrical machinery. These sensors, particularly piezoelectric accelerometers, are widely adopted in condition monitoring due to their high sensitivity to vibrations, although regulatory factors also influence their selection. Finally, the study highlights how automation has progressed from a means of improving efficiency and reducing costs to a critical component of high-quality production, with robots increasingly surpassing human performance in speed and precision, particularly in miniaturized manufacturing domains like semiconductor fabrication.
