Synthesis and mesomorphic phase behavior of Schiff base ester containing a fused heterocyclic ring
Abstract
A novel homologous series of liquid crystals has been synthesized and studied to investigate the effect of alkyl chain and the incorporation of a fused heterocyclic ring on mesomorphic behavior. The series comprises 12 homologues (G1–G12), all of which are enantiotropically nematogenic except G1 and G2, which are monotropically nematic. The molecular design includes 4-alkoxy-3-methoxy cinnamic acid and a 5-aminobenzo[1, 3]dioxole moiety. Phase transitions and textures were observed using POM with a heating stage, and confirmed by DSC. Structural characterization was performed using 1H-NMR, FT-IR, and mass spectrometry. All derivatives exhibit mesomorphic properties within the temperature range of 6.1 °C and 40.7 °C.
