Abstract

Two hydrazones derived from 2,4-dinitrophenyl hydrazine were synthesized. The compounds, 1-(9H-fluoren-2-yl)ethanone-2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazone (1) and 2,4,5-trimethoxybenzaldehyde-2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazone (2) were characterized by NMR, FT-IR spectroscopy, with compound 2 further analyzed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The thermal stability of both compounds was established by thermogravimetric analysis. Compounds 1 and 2 were investigated for their ability to recognize anions colorimetrically. Compound 1 demonstrated reversible recognition of acetate ions.
