Abstract

This study analyzes the portrayal of female victims after the June 3 twin fire and flood disasters in Accra, Ghana, via a content analysis of state and private Ghanaian newspapers. By emphasizing the impact of photographs in disaster reporting, the study reveals a gendered framing dynamic. Females are often depicted passively, whereas males take on active roles, perpetuating traditional gender norms. The study indicates that media ownership influences framing, with state newspapers focusing on governmental actions and private outlets concentrating on emotional narratives. The study advocates equitable, empathetic representations of victims in media narratives, providing nuanced insights into gender dynamics in disaster reporting.
