Abstract

Despite the well-defined architectural typologies in the archaeological site of Bagan, based mainly on their functional uses, there are currently no comprehensive classifications for structural typologies. Since the seismic response of these monuments is greatly influenced by their structural configuration, the goal of this study was to define proper structural typologies and identify representative buildings for seismic assessment. The proposed methodology categorizes structural typologies based on two inclusive parameters, plan symmetry and vertical continuity. Based on the proposed classification, representative case studies were identified for a detailed structural assessment via a weighted-point-based system. The study of these buildings would enable recommendations for repair and seismic retrofitting of similar structural typologies across the site, based on their similar behavior and seismic vulnerability. This approach aimed not only to enhance the understanding of the site monuments’ seismic behavior, through the creation of a structural building taxonomy, but also to significantly contribute to the efficiency of preservation efforts to better protect Bagan’s heritage against future seismic events.
