Automated code compliance checking using BIM and Business Intelligence: Egyptian Unified building Law application
Abstract
Automated Code Compliance Checking (ACCC) has emerged as a transformative paradigm within the building design and construction domain, presenting a substantial departure from the conventional manual design review procedures. The prevailing manual approach to code compliance verification in the construction sector is characterized by time intensiveness, financial burdens, and susceptibility to inaccuracies. To surmount these challenges, the creation of automated code compliance checking systems assumes paramount significance. This research investigates the potential ushered in by technological advancements, particularly in Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Business Intelligence (BI), with specific reference to the Egyptian Unified Building Law 119/2008 (UBL119). The proposed methodology exhibits the capability to execute Code Compliance assessments for both newly designed structures and pre-existing ones, modeled using state-of-the-art 3D scanning and lidar technologies. The tool is designed to check various aspects of the design of building elements to identify any non-compliance according to UBL119. A dashboard is developed to provide checking reports, identify any non-compliance issues, and provide recommendations for corrective action. Two cases (new building villa and LiDAR-based post-construction apartment) are presented to illustrate the use of the proposed code compliance checking methodology. The results are analyzed to provide their compliance with UBL119.
