Abstract

Drawing upon insights gleaned from theories of trauma and of agency, this article examines the representation of these two major features in selected works by Chloé Delaume. Specifically, I analyze the inscription of trauma and agency in two of her texts: Dans ma maison sous terre (Citation2009) and Mes bien chères soeurs (Citation2019). I pay particular attention to Delaume’s multiple textual strategies, such as intertextuality, citation, metatextuality, the use of the epistolary form and of statistics, and her address to the reader. While Delaume’s early autofictional works deal with the individual trauma of the female subject, certain of her more recent texts, such as Mes bien chères soeurs, emphasize a collectivity of women and their battle against patriarchy. As I demonstrate, there is an evolution of feminism and agency in Delaume’s works, a passage from the individual subject to a sorority of women.
