Abstract

Notwithstanding obvious differences in their relation to (auto)fictional writing, Chloé Delaume and Hélène Cixous share a fascination with the character of the witch, whether historically, fictionally or mythologically, and with the potential of witchcraft as feminist empowering. This essay will first offer a selective analytic catalog of these shared thematic traces of the witch and witchcraft in Delaume’s and Cixous’s texts before delving into the two writers’ different yet comparable writing practices, involving the performativity of (self-)writing as a form of witchcraft, feminist rewritings of mythology related to (black) magic, or the liberating work of linguistic distortions in écriture féminine.
