Abstract

In drama, the protagonist is traditionally defined as the character who initiates action and drives the plot forward. However, Chloé Delaume’s plays challenge this fundamental principle, questioning the very notion of the protagonist. Delaume undo the idea of a single central character and, in doing so, builds a secondary drama, outside of the main one, which we will call exodrama. This subversion exposes the obsolescence of conventional dramatic structures, showing that the focus on a dominant character and their actions is an outdated, historically constructed concept. Her plays serve as a narrative laboratory where she refines this new dramatic form, which in turn extends into her broader body of work.
