Abstract

This essay considers the impact Donald Trump has had on French journalism, as exemplified in Le Monde. It shows the initial bemusement of French journalists when this largely unknown real estate mogul declared his intention in 2015 to run for president but then describes how this condescension morphed into deep concern and even fear by the eve of Trump’s second mandate. At the same time the essay describes the ways the journalistic tone and language of Le Monde changed to address the Trump phenomenon.
