Maylis de Kerangal : les Etats-Unis, pays d’immigrations
Abstract
Three of Maylis de Kerangal’s works deal with the United States: a novel, Naissance d’un pont (Citation2010), an autobiographical inspired piece (“Mustang” Citation2021), and a contribution to a collective book on Marilyn Monroe (Citation2021). This study aims to explore these texts to uncover what the writer says about this vast country, its identity (or identities?), the image it projects of itself, and its customs. The issue of immigration—from the first pioneers to population movements linked to globalization—both embraced and rejected, appears central. It lies at the heart of these representations. From it arise numerous contradictions and tensions, segregations and conflicts which this article attempts to describe.
