Abstract

This article traces a reconfiguration in the Francophone imagination of America by placing De la démocratie en Amérique by Alexis de Tocqueville in dialogue with Carnets d’Amérique by Valentin-Yves Mudimbe. Separated by more than a century, these texts stage two distinct regimes of vision. For Tocqueville, America appears as a horizon toward which Europe projects its anxieties and anticipations of democratic modernity; it is a landscape of inquiry through which the Old World contemplates its own future. In Mudimbe’s notebooks, however, the American space acquires a different resonance: it becomes the site of a détour—at once geographical, intellectual, and existential—through which African thought turns back upon the fractures of its own historical condition. What emerges from this displacement is not simply a change of perspective but a transformation of the epistemic stage itself. The Atlantic world ceases to function as a binary axis linking Europe and America and unfolds instead as a triangular field in which Africa reenters history as both subject and interpreter. America, in this configuration, is less an object of knowledge than a reflective surface where the dispersed memories of the African diaspora, the sedimented histories of colonial modernity, and the uncertainties of postcolonial subjectivity converge. Reading Mudimbe alongside Tocqueville thus reveals the emergence of another genealogy of “America” within Francophone thought: no longer merely the political laboratory of Western modernity, but a space of intellectual détour where African consciousness renegotiates its relation to history, knowledge, and the unfinished cartography of the Atlantic world.
