Abstract

Inspired by the theory of epistemic injustice, which has been popular among feminist studies, this paper seeks to unveil the constitution and effect of epistemic injustices experienced by Chinese male swimmers on a daily basis by investigating qualitative data collected through interviews with sixteen Chinese male artistic swimmers with critical discourse analysis. It is revealed that there is a systemic prejudice against male artistic swimmers, who have been constantly assigned to a marginalized position in Chinese society through various discursive dispositifs. This study also highlights the significance of testimonial and hermeneutical responsibility in deconstructing the prejudices against male swimmers in China and society. The paper emphasizes the need for reflexive awareness and structural changes to address these inequities.
