Abstract

This mixed-methods study examined hospitality among a purposive sample of individuals (N = 26) who had housed refugees from Ukraine since the 2022 escalation of the Russo-Ukrainian war. Quantitative analyses examined how this sample compared to other samples and what factors predicted various aspects of hospitableness. The findings suggest that, although empathy and perspective taking were relevant, extending hospitality in remarkable ways was not primarily dependent on particular character traits. We explored qualitative themes related to the experiences, motivations, and challenges of both everyday hospitality and remarkable acts of hospitality among our sample. Superordinate value commitments, empathy, having been the recipient of hospitality, and religiosity were all relevant motivational factors for extending hospitality. We observed complex themes about how participants overcame barriers to engaging in hospitality and how this ultimately resulted in enrichment.
