Abstract

Background This article explores shame as an under-recognised but powerful barrier to recovery following psychosis. Methods I draw on my lived experience of psychotic depression and clinical insights as a registered psychologist. Results I highlight how shame shapes post-psychosis identity, functioning, help-seeking, and reintegration long after psychotic symptoms have abated. Conclusions This article calls for a more compassionate, identity-focused approach to psychosis care that addresses shame resulting from external and internalized stigma attached to psychosis.
