Abstract

The building sector plays a pivotal role in the urban transition to the circular city, especially in Italy, a country with a vast heritage of underused structures. This paper focuses on the adaptive reuse of a former fruit and vegetable covered market in the city of Empoli, exploring the social and personal dimensions of this practice as carried out by the voluntary organisation Recupero Solidale (Re.So). Formerly a local association composed solely of retirees, Re.So became a broad solidarity network, transforming the market into a dynamic centre of Empoli’s circular transition.
