A comparative study of virtual and real fit in customised garments
Abstract
This study compares 3D apparel simulations with the real fit of customised garments for four models and evaluates the accuracy of parametric avatars created in Browzwear VStitcher. Avatars were generated using body measurements, and 2D patterns developed in Telestia Creator were imported into VStitcher and simulated with materials similar to the physical fabric. The virtual garments were compared with physical fitting images, and 21 experienced users assessed the similarities and differences between the virtual and physical dresses. The findings indicate that VStitcher is user-friendly and effective for virtual fittings but is limited by inaccuracies in avatar posture, fat distribution, and fabric representation. The study recommends incorporating anthropometric data into parametric avatar development and expanding digital fabric libraries to improve simulation accuracy. Despite advances in 3D technology, physical fittings remain necessary for customised garment development. This exploratory study provides insights for CAD developers and guidance for users of 3D simulation systems.
