Abstract

Flourishing since 2016, sang culture embodies an ambivalent register of exhaustion, disenchantment, and endurance among Chinese youth. This article argues that sang is best understood as a sang-specific affective space—a digitally mediated formation in which affect circulates through platform affordances and user practices to make shared contradictions livable and publicly knowable. Drawing on longitudinal participant observation of the Douban group “This Day Can Still Be Salvaged,” critical discourse analysis of diaries and memes, and semi-structured interviews, we show how two vernacular repertoires—personal diaries and sang memes—operate as affective artifacts that sustain the spatial and affective economy within this Douban group. Douban’s affordances—including relative anonymity, discursive depth, and community gatekeeping—are integral. They enable sincerity without spectacle and organize circulation under censorship, yielding an ambivalent politics not of overt opposition but of feeling otherwise within the limits of what can be said. Conceptually, this article advances an account of how affect, artifact, and space co-produce a topology of endurance that neither collapses into conformity nor romanticizes resistance. Empirically, it demonstrates how Chinese youth metabolize structural pressures through situated practices that generate solidarity, recalibrate emotional norms, and quietly refigure what can be felt.
