St John Henry Newman’s eminent teaching on education
Abstract
St John Henry Newman was proclaimed a Doctor of the Universal Church by Pope Leo XIV on 1 November 2025. Among Newman’s seminal contributions to Christian thought and practice is his eminent teaching on education. This article provides an overview of Newman’s contribution to that teaching and draws on the author’s article on ‘Education’ in the Positio Super Ecclesiae Doctoratu (2024), the document prepared for the cardinals and theological consultors in their deliberations over whether Newman should be declared a Doctor of the Church.
