Abstract

The field of Country and Region Studies is currently undergoing a profound paradigm shift, as Western-centric discourse faces challenges in its explanatory power. In this context, with emphasis on seeking interaction leading to connectivity rather than animosity between civilizations, Professor Peng Shuzhi developed the Theory of Civilizational Interactions, which centers on the core concepts of historical civilizational interactions, and civilizational consciousness. This theory provides a crucial theoretical foundation for transcending the ‘clash of civilizations’ narrative and constructing Country and Region Studies with Chinese characteristics. The Theory of Civilizational Interactions underpins the construction of an independent knowledge system in Country and Region Studies across three dimensions: foundational cognitive-level holistic inquiry, interpretive-level theoretical and scholarly analysis, and issue-driven applied research. Going forward, sustained efforts should focus on three priorities: deepening the theoretical framework, innovating research methodologies, and strengthening international dialogue. Such measures will further advance the Theory of Civilizational Interactions through open exchange and mutual learning, thereby elevating the international discourse influence of Chinese academia.
