Abstract

This research note assesses the potential of sacred groves as niche tourism destinations in Egypt. In aligning sacred groves with the eco-theology and social norms theory framework, this note draws on existing literature as a starting point for advancing tourism scholarship. This note also explains that sacred groves perform many eco-spiritual and socio-cultural functions, along with other natural and spiritually endowed landscapes. Further, sacred groves are potential candidates for eco-cultural tourism development, as espoused by eco- and socio-tourism. Accordingly, this research note introduces various eco-spiritual and socio-cultural functions of sacred groves and explains how they can be interwoven to develop sacred grove tourism.
