Independence pathways and survival prospects: Kosovo and South Sudan
Abstract
This article examines the pathways to independence and survival prospects of Kosovo and South Sudan. It argues that although both nations achieved independence through distinct routes, their prospects for survival differ significantly. After outlining the theoretical concepts of independence pathways and state survival, the article applies them to the two countries by highlighting their unique experiences. It also analyses the international process that determined Kosovo’s final status and the role of self-determination in shaping South Sudan’s political future. It concludes that Kosovo and South Sudan achieved independence through different pathways, and their survival prospects also differ.
