Abstract

Italy has often been seen as a transit country. Several empirical studies have documented the northbound trajectories of forced migrants leaving the peninsula in search of better opportunities in Northern Europe. However, this portrayal offers a partial view of Italy’s asylum landscape. Drawing on a review of documents and interviews with forced migrants, this article foregrounds the multidirectional migratory trajectories crisscrossing Italy. Employing the concepts of re-routing and nudging to explore protection-seekers’ journeys, it shows that Italy’s role at the southern EU border has become multifaceted, serving as both a space of transit, and – at least temporary – settlement.
