Abstract

The growing demand for rapid and sustainable construction has driven the development of high-early-strength concrete (HESC), capable of achieving required strength within significantly reduced timeframes. This study investigated the role of nano-silica (NS) and cellulose nanofibers (NCel)—both individually and in combination—in enhancing HESC performance. Their effects on workability, hydration, setting time, and strength development were examined. NS enhances the concrete matrix through pozzolanic reactions, generating additional calcium silicate hydrate that improves strength and densification, while NCel acts as fibrous reinforcement, mitigating crack propagation and improving tensile properties. Microstructural analyses, including scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction, revealed the mechanisms underlying these improvements and their synergistic effects. Emerging trends, such as hybrid nanocomposites, smart concrete, and 3D printing, highlight the versatility of these nanomaterials. Despite challenges related to workability, cost, and scalability, integrating NS and NCel offers a promising pathway toward sustainable, high-performance concrete.
