Achieving strength-ductility synergy in a single-phase TiVNbZr refractory high-entropy alloy via a reverse heterogeneous grain structure
Abstract
As a highly promising nuclear material, the single-phase quaternary Ti-V-Nb-Zr refractory high-entropy alloys (RHEAs) suffer from the typical strength-ductility trade-off dilemma. To address this, an unconventional hetero-grain strategy, characterized by hard fine-grains embedded into a soft coarse-grained matrix, was proposed and implemented in a self-developed Ti2VNb0.5Zr0.5 RHEA in the current work. This architecture achieves a high specific yield strength of 172 MPa·cm3/g while retaining ∼16.9 % ductility, outperforming most reported RHEAs and other system alloys. The mechanisms arising from the hetero-deformation induced hardening and strengthening provide opportunities for the performance optimization of RHEAs with limited room-temperature formability.
