Abstract

A bidirectional radio-over-fibre (RoF) system using integrated fibre and free space optics (FSO) link is designed and investigated. Three Laguerre-Gaussian beams are transmitted over 10–100 m FSO and 10 km fibre distance successfully at symmetric 1Gbps data rate under air, haze and rain conditions. Results illustrate that the system can sustain maximum 5–9.5 µm spatial spot size, 11.3mrad beam divergence and minimum −59 to −54dBm received power under diverse atmospheric conditions at 10 m FSO +10 km fibre link. Compared to existing works, this system offers optimum performance and provides high power budget of 32.96 dB, high gain of 65.09 dB and 50.35 dB optical signal-to-noise-ratio.
