Abstract

This study explores the relationship between faculty identities (personal and professorial) and their civically engaged teaching (CET) practices during a politically and socially turbulent time in the United States. We used data from the Faculty Survey of Student Engagement (FSSE), which included 4,020 faculty responses from 32 participating institutions, to conduct a multi-level modeling analysis. We found that faculty personal and professorial identities are associated with their practice of the CET. Faculty were differentially engaged in the CET that focuses on promoting social consciousness and the CET that focuses on encouraging actions. We draw implications on strategic faculty development for CET.
