Spanish as a heritage language in Austria: institutional support and family contexts
Abstract
In Austria, 26.3% of school-age children speak a language other than German at home, with the proportion rising to 50% in Vienna. Within this multilingual context, Spanish speakers constitute only 0.9% of these children. This article examines the position of Spanish as a heritage language in Austria, focusing on two principal institutional frameworks for its maintenance: the Austrian Ministry of Education’s first language instruction program and the Spanish Language and Culture Groups (ALCE), administered by Spain’s Ministry of Education. Drawing on demographic data, institutional documentation, and a survey of ALCE families, the study investigates the motivations, practices, and challenges associated with sustaining Spanish in a predominantly German-speaking environment. The findings reveal Spanish’s dual status as both a prestigious foreign language and a marginal heritage language, highlighting the need for differentiated pedagogical strategies, enhanced peer interaction, and stronger institutional coordination for language maintenance among heritage speakers.
