Abstract

Despite being a fundamental facilitator of reproductive autonomy, abortion care provision and accessibility remains constrained in Australia. Publicly available, comprehensive data from South Australia provides a unique opportunity for a review of incidence, trends and service provision. Adopting a feminist approach and the principles of descriptive epidemiology, this review demonstrates that over the past two decades there has been a significant decline in abortion rates, especially in women aged under 24, and a clear shift in preference toward early medication abortion. However, inconsistencies in services provision between locations arguably creates geographic inequity and limits accessibility in South Australia.
