Abstract

Clinical empathy is crucial in delivering high-quality maternal health care. This study explored mothers’ knowledge, perception, and experiences of empathy within the context of maternal care in Zambia. Using qualitative methods, 14 mothers were interviewed, revealing four themes: ideal maternal providers, understanding of empathy, experiences of empathy in clinical interactions, and the impact of empathetic engagement on the birthing process. Participants reported varied encounters with empathic providers, emphasizing the importance of both verbal and nonverbal communication of empathy. The study recommends integrating empathy training in maternal health services to ensure consistent and compassionate care for mothers across different healthcare settings.
