Abstract

This paper critically examines the rise of “Run It Straight”, a viral, high-impact collision-based “sport” gaining traction globally. Operating outside the governance of mainstream professional sport, Run It Straight exemplifies a new genre of influencer-driven sporting content that prioritises spectacle, virality, and creator charisma over athlete safety.Applying cultural theories of risk, violence, and digital media, the paper explores how Run It Straight has leveraged platform-native storytelling to build legitimacy and engagement, particularly among Generation Z. Problematically operating independently of established sporting bodies, Run It Straight lacks transparency around formal risk mitigation, medical oversight and well-being protocols. The absence of research-informed protocols and formal oversights sits in stark contrast to emerging understandings of athletes’ concussion risk and long-term brain health. In contrast, the paper highlights how community sport, often overlooked in these debates, can position athlete well-being as a unique selling point (USP) (Yorke, C., O’Shea, M., Roman, D., & Rayner, M. (2025). Exploring the business case for prioritising athlete safety in community sport: A Delphi study. Managing Sport and Leisure, 1–6). Through structured, culturally resonant interventions that embed safety within a spirit of play, grassroots clubs offer a compelling alternative. The analysis contributes to a broader research agenda relevant to understanding how traditional sports can adapt to shifting media landscapes while safeguarding participant welfare.
