Abstract

Purpose: Elite athlete mental health is critical for performance and well-being, yet requires system-level support. This study explores how Swiss national sport federations perceive their responsibilities for promoting and protecting athletes’ mental health.Methodology: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted with 121 officials from 29 of 31 eligible Swiss national sport federations. The survey examined the perceived importance of mental health, implementation of ten organisational measures, and responsibility distribution, and alignment within federations.Findings: Mental health was rated important and as important as sporting success. While safeguarding was perceived as most important and best implemented, social media and financial security emerged as the most pressing concerns. Responsibility for mental health initiatives is mainly assigned to sport federations (coaches and performance/youth directors). Within federations alignment on mental health strategies was moderate to low.Practical implications: A comprehensive mental health strategy could be valuable in Swiss elite sports, including clear role definitions, and enhanced mental health literacy.Research Contribution: This study highlights governance gaps in mental health support and advocates for improved strategies to promote and protect athletes’ mental health.Value: The findings provide a basis for targeted policy and organisational improvements to promote and protect Swiss elite athletes’ mental health.
