Abstract

Background Under the cis-stem, trans* people endure harmful behaviors. The repeated discrimination and violence faced by trans* community includes dehumanization. Trans* experiences of dehumanization is a form of cisgenderism and cissexism that call for understanding the ways trans* dehumanization is enacted, as reported by the trans* community.Aims The aim of this study is to document the dehumanization experienced by trans* people in Australia and report on the impacts of trans* dehumanization on well-being, through amplifying trans* voices and collecting experiences to help inform current understanding of cissexism and cisgenderism. This qualitative study is part of a broader study exploring trans* experiences of cisgenderism and cissexism in Australia. Methods Semi-structured interviews (N = 22), facilitated by a trans* researcher, were conducted in this qualitative study. Braun and Clarke’s reflexive thematic analysis approach was used to analyze data. Results Participants’ experiences of cisgenderism and cissexism were explored. Findings indicate two main themes of trans* dehumanization: erasing trans* possibilities and reducing to a trans* body. Conclusions Our research highlights the domains and impact of dehumanization trans* adults in Australia experience. The findings revealed the enactment of dehumanization across domains of internet dating, health, workplace policy, and relationships. This study highlights the need to address acts of violence against trans* people by addressing cis-stems that allow for the dehumanization of trans* people.
