Abstract

This editorial presents the six contributions gathered in the special issue (SI) on ‘Green Finance and Capital Landing’. This SI foregrounds the concept of capital landing to better understand the conditions that enable (or prevent) green financial flows to land in particular places on the one hand, and their distributive and political outcomes on the other. This editorial focuses on three cross-cutting questions: Where do these financial flows land? Why does green finance land in specific socio-spatial configurations? What does capital produce when it lands? Collectively, these contributions demonstrate the connections between financial flows and socio-spatial outcomes. They reveal how capital landing is shaped by multiscalar struggles in capital markets, intermediary spaces and local territories. While processes of green capital landing often reproduce existing inequalities and power relations, some contributions also highlight unintended rearrangements. In doing so, they demonstrate how finance is not unproblematically stretched across space, but that local histories and extant orders matter in assembling financial flows and outcomes. Moreover, they also demonstrate how local and global actors actively seek to reconstruct ‘the local’, thus highlighting how space is tactically used and produced in order to make finance flow.
